TRANSPORTATION & MAPSTRUCKINGInterstate 80 follows an east-west route through the county, connecting Carlin, Elko, Wells and West Wendover with Salt Lake City to the east and Reno to the west. U.S. 93 extends north to south, cutting through Wells and Jackpot and connecting travelers with Twin Falls, Idaho, to the north and Ely and Las Vegas, Nevada, to the south. From Elko, travelers also may take State Route 225 north to Boise, Idaho.
FOREIGN TRADE ZONESNorthern Nevada has nearly 7,500 acres of foreign trade zones. A foreign trade zone is designated by the United States Customs Department and allows foreign and domestic merchandise to be admitted for operations such as storage, exhibition, assembly, manufacture, and processing, without being subject to formal Customs entry procedures, the payment of Customs duties or the payment of federal excise taxes. Currently, there are no foreign trade zones within Elko County, but the planned Northeastern Nevada Regional Railport and Industrial Park could very well be the newest foreign trade zone in Nevada in the coming year.
RAIL SERVICEThe Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad provide east-west service through northeastern Nevada. The Union Pacific Railroad owns both the eastbound and westbound track, while Burlington Northern Santa Fe is allotted track access. The tracks roughly parallel Interstate 80. The railroads change direction west of Reno; Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad travels along the northern coast, while the Union Pacific runs into southern California.
The new Northeastern Nevada Regional Railport and Industrial Park includes transloading service for a variety of industries in the region. The impact of this new development is estimated to be a huge benefit to all types of industry and will make Elko County an even more attractive site location for new industry. Warehousing service will be available at the Railport and industrial land will be available for purchase or lease. AMTRAK operates out of Elko for northeastern Nevada passengers.
