TRANSPORTATION & MAPS

TRUCKING

Interstate 80 follows an east-west route through the county, connecting Carlin, Elko, Wells and West Wendover with Salt Lake City to the east and Reno to the west. U.S. 93 extends north to south, cutting through Wells and Jackpot and connecting travelers with Twin Falls, Idaho, to the north and Ely and Las Vegas, Nevada, to the south. From Elko, travelers also may take State Route 225 north to Boise, Idaho.

FOREIGN TRADE ZONES

Northern Nevada has nearly 7,500 acres of foreign trade zones. A foreign trade zone is designated by the United States Customs Department and allows foreign and domestic merchandise to be admitted for operations such as storage, exhibition, assembly, manufacture, and processing, without being subject to formal Customs entry procedures, the payment of Customs duties or the payment of federal excise taxes.

Currently, there are no foreign trade zones within Elko County, but the planned Northeastern Nevada Regional Railport and Industrial Park could very well be the newest foreign trade zone in Nevada in the coming year.

RAIL SERVICE

The Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad provide east-west service through northeastern Nevada. The Union Pacific Railroad owns both the eastbound and westbound track, while Burlington Northern Santa Fe is allotted track access. The tracks roughly parallel Interstate 80. The railroads change direction west of Reno; Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad travels along the northern coast, while the Union Pacific runs into southern California.

The Northeastern Nevada Regional Railport Mulit-modal Team Track Facility is a 60 acre rail-served facility ran by a professional transloading firm. The site is located approximately 4 miles east of the city of Elko.

Northeastern Nevada Regional Railport is located in the heart of the largest gold producing area in North America. This region is a hub of mining activity and is experiencing good economic growth.

AMTRAK operates out of Elko for northeastern Nevada passengers.
