Borda selected to head ECEDA Tuesday, September 22, 2009 By ALI HELGOTH- Staff Writer Elko Daily Free Press
ELKO Pam Borda will replace Elaine Barkdull Spencer as executive director of the Elko County Economic Diversification Authority when she steps down at the end of October.
Borda, the former president of the Spring Creek Association, will begin duties Oct. 1, giving her a full month on the job with Barkdull Spencer before she takes the reins.
Borda said she was interested in the position because of the work Barkdull Spencer has done, and said she believes the position is a good fit for her skills.
In an application letter, she wrote, Although I have not worked directly in economic diversification, I have been involved on the periphery here in Elko and in Carson City.
I understand the importance of economic diversification and believe my skills and experience are well suited for this position.
During a board meeting Monday, chairwoman Mary Korpi of Newmont said it was Borda's experience with strategic planning that put her ahead of other applicants.
She had a tremendous amount of background in that area, said Korpi, who also highligthed her marketing and sales experience.
There were 17 applicants for the position and four finalists from Elko County were interviewed last week. The executive committee unanimously selected Borda for the job, and the full board unanimously affirmed the choice Monday.
Borda said she looks forward to working with Barkdull Spencer and plans to understand what ECEDA already has in the works before starting the process of planning for the future.
Barkdull Spencer said it should be an easy transition to take herself out of the position and allow Borda to take over.
She's a great fit for the position, said Barkdull Spencer, who took part in the interview process.
The future of ECEDA for the next few years will be in property development, she said, and Borda's strategic planning background will be a benefit for the member cities that are in different stages of development.
In addition she said Borda has the characteristics and personality needed to be successful.
Barkdull Spencer steps down after five years with the organization. In a letter announcing her resignation, she wrote she plans to follow my passion and to once again become a business owner.
She plans to open a coffee shop and second-hand sporting goods store.
