Cummins Rocky Mountain Ready to Grow Elko Daily Free Press By Marianne Kobak/Business Editor
ELKO — By the end of the year, Elko residents will see a bigger and better Cummins Rocky Mountain in the city.
The Denver-based company began the first phase of its new Elko facility Tuesday with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The new building at 2735 Ruby Vista Drive will contain all the amenities to support full-service mechanics for both mining and on-highway customers as well as offices for employees.
Eric Sparks, chief financial officer and executive vice president for Cummins, said the facility will bring a “niche to the area.”
He said the business is expanding its Elko location to better support the needs of its customers.
Sparks said the national economy has not had an effect on Cummins.
“We focused on the long-term strategy,” he said. “We’re committed more to the long term and Elko is instrumental to our long-term committment.”
He said the company is scheduled to move in Dec. 1. The Elko branch should employ about 20 people but it could see growth.
Cummins employs 15 people at its current location.
Cummins has outgrown the old Elko facility on Idaho Street that is 7,00 square feet with two drive-through bays. According to the company, it lacks the needed materials to support current and future business. The new building will be 25,905 square feet with five drive-through bays.
“The increased capacity allows for our customers to be serviced in a timely fashion and will provide a quality service experience,” said Chuck Faul, Elko branch manager.
Customer amenities include steam bay, energy efficient lighting and environmental designed waste water system. The new building will host a Coach Care lounge for RV travelers and other on-site enhancements.
The larger shop will hold more equipment and machinery, a parts warehouse will have increased inventory and spacious areas for customer support and employees. It also gives room for expansion of the on-highway and mining business within the area.
Branch employees will be able to use new features such as men’s and women’s locker rooms, training facility for multiple uses for the entire distributorship and Cummins Inc. employees, as well as a lunch room and offices.
“CRM’s investment into this facility shows the commitment we have for Elko and the trust it has in our employees within the community,” Faul said.
Elko County Economic Diversification Authority recognized Cummins’ investment to the community with a plaque. ECEDA Executive Director Elaine Barkdull Spencer said the plaque was to “recognize the growth to the company and to the economy of Elko.
“In this case it’s also to the diversification of Elko’s economy,” she said.
