Railport contract awarded By ALI HELGOTH - Staff Writer Elko Daily Free Press
ELKO - Elko County Commissioners on Wednesday awarded a $7.5 million contract to Peavine Construction of Sparks to build infrastructure needed for the Northeastern Nevada Regional Railport.
As part of the project, Peavine Construction will construct three sets of tracks to allow trains to pull off the existing track and access the property; improve an access road to the property; create culverts to channel water that flows through existing creeks in the area; and complete other projects to establish infrastructure.
The project is expected to begin in November and be completed in 245 days, making it possible the railport could be operational by the beginning of 2010.
Four companies bid on the project; the next lowest bid was for $10.2 million from Frehner Construction of Elko.
“I think it's a great project and it's exciting to even think about being ready to break ground,” said Commissioner Sheri Eklund-Brown.
The county has already sold a number of parcels at the Osino site. Pacific Steel and Recycling purchased 45 acres, SAS Global purchased 30, Spirit Minerals purchased 20 and Ormaza Construction purchased 27.
All that's left to sell is the central portion of the project, about 290 acres of developable land with close access but no frontage to the rail.
