Speakers for regional economic sustainability workshop named

ELKO - Representatives of three counties are slated for a panel discussion Sept. 30 at the kick-off dinner for a workshop geared to mining communities on “Northern Nevada Sustainability: A Promise for the Future” in Battle Mountain.

Elko County Commissioner Sheri Eklund-Brown, Humboldt County Commissioner Tom Fransway and Lander County Executive Director Gene Etcheverry will be on the panel to talk about “What is Sustainability and What Challenges Does It Present in a Boom/Bust Economy?”

Patty Herzog and Reg Reid are listed as the public lands representatives on the panel and Newmont Mining Corp. plans to have a representative, according to the new workshop agenda.

The panel discussion follows the dinner at the Battle Mountain Civic Center.

The full-day workshop Oct. 1 will include a panel discussion on funding opportunities, with Joe Locurto, director of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, as one of the panelists.

Clint Koble, executive director of the Nevada Rural Development Corp., Mary Korpi, manager of external relations for Newmont and Rodney Davis of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension also will be on the panel.

Jay Davison, a UNR area extension specialist, and Kynda Curtis, a UNR agricultural market specialist, will talk on sustainable agriculture, and Buddy Borden of the UNR Cooperative Extension, will talk on “Developing Partnerships for Success.”

UNR professor Tom Harris is scheduled to present a model of community business funding and also be on a panel talking about the Lander Future Industrial Needs Discovery Pilot Project, along with Davis, George Fennemore of Barrick Gold Corp.'s Cortez Mine, Tony Brinkman of UNR and Jon Sherve of the Lander Economic Development Authority.

“Foundations for Curbside Recycling in Elko, Nevada” will be presented by Margo Teague of Impact Evaluation and Assessment Services, according to the agenda.

Jim Collord will present an update on the Northern Nevada Partnership-Elko's activities and Sharlet Berentsen will give an update on the Humboldt-Pershing Sustainable Development Partnership.
