Local jobless rate stays low while rest of state on the rise By Marianne Kobak Elko Daily Free Press
ELKO - Nevada's unemployment rate increased to 7.1 percent in August, but Elko's micropolitan area rate remains the lowest in the state at 4 percent.
Elko and Eureka counties have not shown a change from July to August, but the rate is an increase when compared to the same time last year. The unemployment rate for the area in August 2007 was 3.3 percent, according to the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
The micropolitan area's total labor force in 2007 was about 28,000 compared to about 30,000 this year.
Elko County's total labor force in August was 29,130 people. There were 1,150 unemployed people in Elko County in August.
The state's unemployment rate hit a 23-year high at 7.1 percent in August compared to 6.6 percent in July. Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City all posted job losses.
