Special economic meeting planned: National problems adding to pressures on locals By MARIANNE KOBAK - Business Editor Elko Daily Free Press
ELKO - Despite Elko's strong economy, the economic difficulties on the state and national front affect the county's financial system. With this in mind the Elko County Economic Diversification Authority will host a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Turquoise room at the Elko Convention Center to discuss this issue.
“We do have a good, strong local economy,” said Elaine Barkdull Spencer, ECEDA's executive director.
However, when new industries or businesses talk to locals, they receive a message of “economic struggles,” she said. The meeting will discuss what actual, rather than perceived, struggles Elko faces and determine potential solutions.
Barkdull Spencer said Elko County's economy is stronger than Nevada's or the nation's.
“We tend to get umbrellaed with the rest of the state,” she said. “We're that shiny spot in the state that people shouldn't be afraid to invest in.”
Barkdull Spencer said people from the mining industry, schools and housing community will be in attendance to discuss what is happening in Elko and what can be done to improve the area's economy.
“We will be realistic,” she said. “We want to hear from the public on what's going on.”
People who want to attend the meeting should RSVP to ECEDA at 738-2100.
