More houses going up: Brookwood project plans 43 homes in Phase 1
By MARIANNE KOBAK - EDFP Business Editor
ELKO - New homes will start sprouting in a few weeks as the latest development in Elko, Brookwood Estates, begins construction.
The 92-lot subdivision, between Wright Way and North Fifth Street, will start with construction on 43 lots for phase one.
The lots vary in size from 6,000 to 10,000 square feet and homes will range from 1,273 to 3,100 square feet, said Howard Schmidt, Brookwood Estates developer.
“All the underground improvements are in,” Schmidt said. “We're waiting for it to warm up to pour asphalt.
“I think we'll start building homes in the next two weeks.”
“We're really focusing on quality, affordable housing,” said Jay Erwin of A&J Properties, the home builder for the project.
“We're creating a themed environment,” Schmidt said. “The homes will be designed with a mountain craftsman feel. You'll see wood beams and posts and a lot of stone work.”
“We're trying to fill a price gap,” Erwin said. “There doesn't seem to be a lot of homes in the low to mid-$200s ($200,000).”
All homes will have two-car garages with room enough for a third, and the homes will have basements if requested by the buyer.
“We're designing them to be efficient,” Erwin said.
“The nice thing about presale is it gives people the ability to pick their own colors,” Schmidt said.
There will be a three- to five-month construction schedule for the homes.
“Elko has its challenges with the workforce and the available labor pool,” Erwin said.
Several dignitaries came out for the groundbreaking Thursday including Elko Mayor Mike Franzoia and Elaine Barkdull Spencer, Elko County Economic Diversification Authority executive director.
Franzoia said the development was “a good thing” and would help attract people to Elko to fill jobs.
“The only thing keeping us from fulfilling those needs is available housing,” he said.
Barkdull Spencer agreed the project would draw employees to the community.
“The good news is this project is going to break ground immediately,” she said. “Concepts are great and planning is wonderful but when they can start building that's what we need.”
People interested in a home should contact Trinity Realty.
Jesse James of Trinity Realty said the development is catering to first-time home buyers as well as those looking to upgrade.
“It's definitely affordable housing,” she said.
There are five floor plans from which to choose; 10 lots are under contract.
