One small town, two big issues: workforce and housing

ELKO - Those who have needs or concerns about Elko's workforce and housing might want to attend Friday's Elko County Economic Diversification Authority meeting.
ECEDA's Workforce Development Committee is scheduled to discuss these important issues during the 10 a.m. meeting at the High Desert Inn.
“Our major employers and local mines have asked for an update on local housing developments in addition to progress reports on all of the major housing projects that were reported on during a meeting ECEDA hosted last year,” said ECEDA Executive Director Elaine Barkdull Spencer.
The meeting is open to the public and Barkdull Spencer encourages all employers to attend.
“The reason to attend is that ECEDA's host housing update meetings are just twice a year,” she said. “There will not be another update until fall.”
There will be news to share. “We have developers and subcontractors traveling to Elko to present updates on their projects and to network with our larger employers,” Barkdull Spencer said. “Representatives from Reno, Las Vegas, Pahrump, California and Salt Lake City will be attending.”
The meeting will be conducted as a roundtable discussion.
“Anyone wishing to speak or give an update on the workforce or housing topic may do so,” she said. “Your input is greatly appreciated. These meetings are critical for communication and will benefit all.”
She said the response from the single-home builders and housing developers “has been overwhelming. Some of the larger developers will be present at the meeting. It is your chance to find out what housing opportunities will be available for employees of your expanding companies,” Barkdull-Spencer said. “The developers would also like to hear from you all. They need to know what types of housing are needed. Many of the developers have agreed to do multifamily apartments and condos.”
Barkdull Spencer said, “It should be an opportunity that you will not want to miss.”
