Elko city building permit valuation up $4.1 million

By MARIANNE KOBAK - Business Editor

ELKO - The City of Elko was running behind in 2007 insofar as building permits are concerned, but fall construction has raised the valuation more than $4.1 million compared to last year.

Elko City Building Official Ted Schnoor said Ablah's $7 million warehouse - to be used by Newmont Mining and Cashman Equipment - is the main reason the city is ahead.

“With them putting the extension on Ruby Vista, we anticipate more development and growth out there,” Schnoor said. “We are anticipating development to continue in Elko.”

The 162,180 square foot building will be Newmont's master distribution center for its operations in northern Nevada and it will incorporate the parts and operations for Cashman, the local Caterpillar dealer.

Schnoor said several other large projects are preparing land for construction.

“We're still trying to put the final touches on the Family Dollar Store and Aaron's,” said Schnoor. “The Riverview Condominiums still have work they have to do on the flood plain. ... They're getting the drainage system in and we're anticipating an early spring start on construction.”

Schnoor has been given plans for buildings at the Brookwood subdivision on North Fifth Street and has heard inquiries on The Pointe at Ruby View and the Ruby View Estates.

“Those will start to get the green flag on development,” Schnoor said.

This year's permit valuation as of Oct. 31 totaled $27.2 million, compared to $23 million at the same time last year.

There were 23 permits for single-family dwellings issued by Oct. 31, which compares to 25 issued by the same time last year.

There were 18 manufactured home foundations by Oct. 31, which compares to 24 issued at the same time last year.
