Growing an economy
By ELAINE BARKDULL SPENCER—Executive Director Elko County Economic Diversification Authority
In May of this year Wadley-Donovan Group of New Jersey presented the finding of an ECEDA funded workforce analysis. After detailing the various findings, Bill Fredrick of WDG provided several recommendations. One such recommendation was to work on the various cities’ “quality of life”. He recommended our cities try to attract new people to our area in order to grow our workforce. Growing our workforce, according the Fredrick, is the primary tool to growing our economy.
Fredrick explained that quality of life could relate to many factors in a community. He explained that northeastern Nevada might appeal to an identifiable segment of people and that we should target those individuals. He also explained that cultural differences in various regions have sabotaged the efforts of states trying to recruit and grow their populations. Fredrick’s recommendations included finding method of mentoring new people into our area and finding ways of making our good communities into… great communities!
ECEDA staff, Chamber Staff and the SBDC met in late May to discuss quality of life in Elko County and decided that the Elko County Economic Issues Committee was the best vessel to address the topic.
Addressing such a diverse topic would not be easy, so it was divided into separate sessions and four meetings of the EEI Committee. June’s meeting of the EEI Committee addressed Education in Elko County. The meeting was held on June 15 and guests included representatives of the Elko Parks and Rec. Dept., the School District and Great Basin College. The next meeting is slated for July 13 and will address Housing, Retail/Service, Medical and Downtown Redevelopment. It will be one of the EEI Committee’s longer meetings due to the popularity of the various items. In August the topic will be Tourism, Gaming, Recreation and Local Attractions. September ends the quality of life series with Social Programs, Childcare, and Public Safety.
The goal of ECEDA and the Elko Area Chamber of Commerce is to find various ways of making a great place like Elko County into an even better place to work and live.
