Kennametal buys Tricon

Elko-The name has changed, but customers can still rely on the same quality and service when they order wear, impact and abrasion-resistant steel prducts from Kennametal Tricon metals and Services.

Formerly Tricon, the company was acquired by Kennametal in October.

"Tricon's application expertise and quick response to customer needs provide exceptional value in demanding environments," said Gary Weismann, Kennametal vice president and president of Kennametal's advanced materials solutions group, in a statement.

"It also provides us an opportunity to leverage our presence in emerging markets, positioning us to further achieve georgraphical balance. Tricon's leadership position in surface mining, coupled with Kennametal's strength in underground mining, provides us a strong basis for capitalizing on world-class technologies an capabilities to deliver continued value, service and solutions to our customers."

To Elko customers, Tricon will provide the same quality service, just under a different name Operations Manager Jim Blankenship said.

Tricon was founded in 1968 and is among the nation's leading suppliers of abrasion-resistant plate materials, alloy shafting and specialty steels for surface and underground mining, including coal, hard rock and oil sands. Tricon also offers custom fabrications and technical services.

Kennametal was founded in 1938 by metallurgist Philip McKenna. It produces tools for mining and road contruction industries, including cutter drums, toolholding systems and a line of conical tools, sleeves and blocks.
