ELKO REGIONAL AIRPORT

Elko Regional Airport

Elko Regional Airport is 5-year old state-of-the-art terminal. The building, which is approximately 20,000 square feet, includes all the conveniences and securities of a large airport terminal, with the comforts of a small town atmosphere.

Modern Conveniences
The facility has a jet bridge that can serve aircrafts from an EMB-120, currently used by Sky West, all the way up to a Boeing 757. The bridge will also serve up to three aircraft simultaneously. The facility also has a number of passenger comforts and conveniences including a business center, an ATM, and soon, wireless Internet access. The restaurant serves both the secure and the nonsecure sides of the airport, allowing the public to be served both before and after the security gate.

Upgraded Security
The airport has recently upgraded their security system to include closed circuit television and biometric access control, in addition to upgrading security fencing and gates located on the perimeter of the airport.

The airport is planning over $27 million in capitol construction. The biggest chunk of this is to relocate the parallel taxiway and to extend the runway another 1500 feet.

Commercial Flights
Elko Regional Airport offers direct flights to the east. Skywest Airlines (Delta Connection) is a regional airline with 7 daily flights to Salt Lake City, Utah using an Embrarer EMB-120 aircraft. A new carrier for direct flights west to Reno will be selected in the near future.

Great Basin College

Career and Technical Education at GBC
Great Basin College has long been a partner with business and industry in northeastern Nevada. The college responded to rapid growth in the mining industry by creating innovative partnerships to train workers in a variety of occupational areas. The College offers several degrees in the Career and Technical Education Department. The college can also prepare students for careers in Electrical Systems, Diesel and Welding Technologies, and Industrial Plant Mechanics.

Great Basin College offers a fast-paced, 48-week curriculum. Ninety-five percent of graduates are hired within 90 days of completing the program.

A student can graduate with an Associate of Applied Science, or a Certificate of Achievement. Both awards will result in students finding meaningful employment quickly, but the associate degree opens doors for the students to further advance in their career when they decide to pursue their bachelor degree.

Electrical System Technology graduates gain skills in the installation and maintenance of the high-tech electrical systems found in modern industrial environments. Students find work in diverse fields, including mining, power and water utilities, construction, water resource management, and gaming.

Diesel Technology provides study and hands on training in heavy equipment technology, electrical and electronic theory, hydraulic systems, and engine and heavy equipment repair.

Students interested in learning the skills involved in the field of Welding Technology will study theory, blueprint reading, fabrication techniques, weld quality control, and basic metallurgy. Qualifying graduates are awarded welding certifications that will help them to acquire high paying jobs in industries located throughout the region.

Economic development in northern Nevada has created a need for students trained in the arts of Industrial Plant Mechanics. Study in this program is diverse, and includes tool safety and maintenance, fluid-power system design and operation, bulk material handling, welding and metallurgy, and blueprint reading and design. Graduates find work in fields ranging from industrial manufacturing to education and health care.

Students accepted to any of these Career and Technical Programs are eligible for Manpower Training Cooperative scholarships made possible by partnerships between the college and industry. Students receive $3,000 scholarships that cover tuition, fees, and books.
