Since the 1960's, when gold was first found along the Carlin Trend, northeastern Nevada has become the largest gold producing region in North and South America and the 4th largest gold producer in the world. This is not your great-great grandfathers' gold mining with picks and shovels; this is highly technical state of the art mining of microscopic gold. The largest gold mine producing companies in the world, Barrick Gold Corporation and Newmont Mining Corporation both have significant open pit and underground gold mining operations in the area employing thousands of people and providing some of the best paying jobs in the state of Nevada.
